Another famous inhabitant

Sir John Ferne, author of "The Blazon of Gentrie", was born at Temple Belwood. He was educated at Oxford and wrote the book in 1578 with it being printed in 1586. After his death in 1610 he was buried in Belton Church.

In and around the church

Members of several families associated with Temple Belwood and the previous Belwood estate are buried or commemorated in and around Belton Church. There are plaques, tablets, gravestones and tombs with names such as Sheffield, Johnson, Hilton, Ryther, Vavasour, Steer, Popplewell and Ferne. When the twelfth century tomb of Richard de Belwood was opened in the sixteenth century to inter Thomas Vavasour a lead coffin was found, when opened a pair of slippers were still on Richard’s feet. A framed section of ancient stained glass from Belwood Old Hall is on show in the church, it was given to the church by J.W.D. Johnson. A clock was installed in the church tower in 1897 to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria. Mrs. Louisa Johnson of Temple Belwood performed the opening ceremony on the 30th September of that year.

1903 1st Edition - The M. S. in a Red Box

The M. S. in a Red Box.

First published in 1903 this historical, romantic novel is set in the 17th Century in the Isle of Axholme, in and around places like Temple Belwood and Crowle.
It was first published without credit to any author as the original manuscript was left in a red box at a publisher un-signed. There have been several reprints over the years and now it is thought the author to be the Rev. John Arthur Hamilton and his name is now credited.
